Intervening effects between recombination and the present can alter the anisotropy. These divide basically into two categories:

- gravitational effects from metric distortions:
- rescattering effects from reionization:

early and late ISW effects, their non-linear analogue the Rees-Sciama effect, tensor metric distortions, and gravitational lensing,

rescattering damping, cancelled Doppler effect, Vishniac effect, kinetic and thermal SZ effect, patchy reionization.
